DIY Family Fun: Handmade Beeswax Candles

Use natural beeswax and cotton wicks to create your own Eco-friendly candles.

Candles are a great way to create a cozy and warm atmosphere in your home. However, many candles on the market are made with synthetic materials that can release harmful chemicals when burned. If you're looking for a natural and Eco-friendly alternative, why not try making your own candles with beeswax?

Beeswax is a natural and renewable resource that is obtained from the honeycomb of bees. It has a beautiful golden colour and a sweet, honey-like scent that is perfect for candles. Beeswax candles burn cleaner and longer than traditional candles, and they also emit negative ions that can help purify the air.

Here's how to make your own handmade beeswax candles:

Materials:

Beeswax sheets or beeswax blocks
Cotton wicks
Scissors
Double boiler or a heat-proof bowl and a saucepan
Candle moulds or jars

Instructions:

  1. Cut the wick to the desired length and thread it through the centre of the candle mould or jar.

  2. Melt the beeswax in a double boiler or heat-proof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water. Beeswax melts at a temperature of around 145 to 147 degrees Fahrenheit, so make sure to keep an eye on the temperature.

  3. Once the beeswax is melted, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. You want the wax to be around 120 degrees Fahrenheit before pouring it into the mould or jar.

  4. Pour the melted beeswax into the mould or jar, making sure to leave a little bit of room at the top. Let the wax cool and harden completely before trimming the wick and lighting the candle.

Tips:

  • Beeswax candles burn best when the wick is centred and trimmed to 1/4 inch.
  • If you're using a mould, you can easily remove the candle by placing the mould in the freezer for a few minutes. The candle will shrink slightly and pop out of the mould.
  • Beeswax can be a bit expensive, but it's worth it for the high-quality and Eco-friendly candles you'll be making.
  • You can add essential oils or dried herbs to the melted beeswax for a personalized touch and a lovely scent.

Making your own handmade beeswax candles is not only a fun and easy DIY project, but it's also a great way to create a cozy and natural ambience in your home. So, give it a try and see the difference for yourself!
